What Do Taylor Pipes Sound Like?
Taylor Pipes are still being played across the world. Their iconic sound has been studied and replicated by pipemakers through the years. Most sets of Taylor Pipes have been adjusted & maintained to be kept in playing order. Below are some highlights from people who play Taylor Pipes.
Taylor Pipes...
Shown here are Taylor Pipes played by Seán McKiernan, recipient of the 2010 TG4 Musician of the Year Award. Seán is playing an Air followed by the reel "The Gardiner's Daughter". Everyone has a story about how they came to be owning a set of Taylor Pipes. Seán might tell you that story... This set was once owned by Patsy Touhey.
A Set From the Grave
Noone who originally owned a set of Taylor Brother Pipes is still alive! But this story of how Canon Goodman's Taylor Set changed hands is unbelievable. Here, in this video you see Mícheál Ó Riabhaigh telling Bill O'Herlihy about the history of them.
Restore restore restore...
Watch this video to see what Taylor Brothers sounded in 2024. This set was restored by Bill Haneman and tested by Padráic Keane at Willie Clancy Week. Padráic had just been asked to play them, and hadn't otherwise known the set.
More on that restored set.
Watch the Video with the uilleann piper Liam Wynette. Same as above, Liam was asked to play the set just before you hear him here. It's a testament to Taylor Brothers work, the pipemakers and folks that restore them, and the musicians that keep playing them.
The sets play on and on...
Shown here is Rick Lines playing "The Merthyr Hornpipe". While the chanter is a Patsy Brown chanter, the rest of the set is Taylor Brothers. The set was owned at one time by Professor John J. Cummings. Rick's set seen here is also in the video by Jason Rouse: Unboxing a Taylor set of Pipes from 1880.
Taylor Brothers Pipes are heard at at all kinds of celebrations... may they live on and on through the hands of the pipers...
Shown here is a 3D video of the a lovely wedding reception... The piper being Conor Freeland, who owns the O'Donnell Taylor set, which can be heard here. Conor and friends are playing the tunes: Behind the Haystack / The Kesh Jig. Enjoy!
